Communication between the kitchen and the dining room is often accelerated by a kitchen printer, although nowadays it can be replaced by a kitchen display system. The size and features of kitchen displays can vary greatly, as each work environment is different and also requires its own approach.

Display systems are not just information displays, but allow for two-way conversation between the waiters and the kitchen. This differs from a printer in that the kitchen can, if desired, communicate back and tell when action is expected from the waiter.
